Charles Richardson
Charles Richardson, a Black man, was held at the jail in Marion, Arkansas, in March 1910. Early on March 18, a mob overpowered the deputy sheriff, took the jail keys and removed Richardson from the jail, and hanged him from a tree in the jail yard, according to press accounts. Papers gave the size of the mob variously as up to 50 and as about 300. One account says the sheriff had left the jail before the mob arrived, and another says the jail had been left unguarded because local officers believed the situation was normal. The lynching was not discovered until daylight.
