Charles Patterson
Chas. Patterson was held in the custody of the sheriff at Sidney, Nebraska, in October 1875. According to the Cheyenne Daily Leader, a crowd met him in the street, took him from the sheriff, and put a rope around his neck over a telegraph pole, and the sheriff cut him down and took him to the jail. The Kenosha Telegraph and the Eaton Democrat report that a party of lynchers later took him from the jail and hanged him from a telegraph pole, and that the sheriff cut him down once before the mob returned and succeeded on a second attempt. His body was later found on a rude scaffold.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob took Charles Patterson from the Sidney, Nebraska jail and hanged him from a telegraph pole, after the sheriff had cut him down once; the Cheyenne Daily Leader and The Kenosha Telegraph both report the hanging.
