Charles N. Smith, a former baseball player, was hanged at Decatur, Illinois, on November 29, 1895, the Indianapolis Journal reported. The paper said the execution was carried out without accident. On the scaffold he spoke briefly in a faint voice and said he was sorry for what he had done. He was pronounced dead about six minutes after the execution at 11:33.
