Charles Faggart
Charles Faggart, a 31-year-old food truck and catering business owner and father of a young son, died in April 2025 after an incident at the Duval County Jail in Jacksonville, where he was being held. According to a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office report, he was placed in a restraint safety chair and later restrained again by several officers, and he was found in cardiac arrest before being taken to UF Health, where he died on April 10. His family's attorney says he was beaten and had been brain dead since the incident, which the sheriff's office has not confirmed. Nine corrections staff were suspended or reassigned, and the FBI and state attorney are investigating, while the medical examiner's findings and the surveillance video have not been made public.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by staff (disputed). The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office report says officers restrained him in a chair and that he had a seizure, but his family's attorney says officers beat him, and medical records obtained by The Tributary show fractures and organ damage and contradict the seizure account.
Reported by: Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him); family's attorney Belkis Plata (family or their lawyers); The Tributary, from medical records it obtained (reporters).
Lawsuit: His family filed a public records lawsuit against the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office seeking surveillance video and incident reports, and no settlement or award amount has been reported.
