Charles Elliot McGrew
Charles Elliot McGrew, 71, was held at East Mississippi Correctional Facility in Lauderdale County, Mississippi, when he died on June 10, 2024. According to the facility's operator, Management and Training Corp., and Sheriff Billy Sollie, he was found unresponsive in his cell with a rope made of sheets around his neck and was pronounced dead at a Meridian hospital. Officials now believe his cellmate strangled him rather than that he hanged himself, and a grand jury may be asked to indict the cellmate. The ACLU and Southern Poverty Law Center, which are suing the facility over its conditions, said the group will examine his death.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody. Management and Training Corp. and Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie say his cellmate strangled him after officials ruled out hanging, and a grand jury may be asked to indict the cellmate.
