Charles Blgford

Charles Begford was held in the jail at Hillsboro, Jefferson County, Missouri, in February 1869. A St. Louis dispatch reprinted in the Worcester Daily Spy says a large crowd of men took him from the jail on the morning of February 9 and hanged him, along with another man. The New York Herald gives the time as about two in the morning, and the New-York Tribune gives the date as February 16. The sheriff's office has made no statement in these accounts about whether jail officers resisted the crowd or handed the men over.
