Charles Adair

50 years old · died July 5, 2025 · Wyandotte County Adult Detention Center, Wyandotte County, Kansas

Charles Adair, 50, was a father of three and a devoted Kansas City Chiefs and Royals fan, according to his family and an obituary. He died on July 5, 2025, at the Wyandotte County Jail in Kansas, a day after being booked there, following treatment in the jail infirmary for a leg wound. The county coroner ruled his death a homicide from mechanical asphyxiation. The family's federal lawsuit says a deputy knelt on his back for one minute and 26 seconds while he was handcuffed and face down in his cell, and that he was complying with commands and had repeatedly called for help. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has described a struggle, which the family disputes; charges against a former detention officer were dismissed in August 2026 and prosecutors have appealed.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by staff (disputed; neglect alleged). The Wyandotte County coroner ruled the death a homicide from complications of mechanical asphyxia after a detention officer knelt on his back, while the officer's attorney says he acted reasonably and the family's federal lawsuit alleges excessive force, failure to intervene and inadequate training, with the family also contesting the KBI's account that he resisted staff.

Reported by: Wyandotte County Coroner's Office (medical examiner or coroner); Kansas Bureau of Investigation (outside investigators); Wyandotte County District Attorney's Office; Adair family and attorneys (federal lawsuit) (family or their lawyers); Kansas City Defender (reporters); Melinda Henneberger (reporters).

Lawsuit: Charles Adair's family filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against Wyandotte County, its sheriff and jail staff, and the case is pending with no settlement or award reported.
