Chadrick Aspen Wade

30 years old · died July 4, 2022 · Fountain Correctional Facility, Escambia County, Alabama

Chadrick Aspen Wade, 30, was the baby of his family, and his mother, Sarah Burch, describes him as a good boy who worked with his father, drew art that classmates paid for, and loved his siblings, especially his brother Timothy, whose death devastated him. He was held at Fountain Correctional Facility in Atmore, Alabama, and died on July 4, 2022. The Alabama Department of Corrections said he was found unresponsive on his bunk, taken to the health care unit and pronounced dead, and that the cause is pending results and an investigation by its Law Enforcement Services Division. His mother said he had repeatedly asked for mental health care and told a guard he felt suicidal shortly before he died. A man held nearby said Wade died by suicide from an overdose, but the autopsy was not complete and prison officials had offered little information.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (neglect alleged). An inmate housed near Wade says he died by suicide from an overdose, while his mother says staff did not act on his repeated requests for mental health care or his statement to a guard that he felt suicidal, and the autopsy is not complete.

Reported by: Shaun Traywick (witnesses).
