Carly Smith was 38 years old. She was taken to the Shelby County Jail on August 8, 2024, and was seen by medical staff that day. Just before 2 a.m. on August 13, during a safety check, she appeared to be in medical distress, and she was pronounced dead at 2:26 a.m. The sheriff's office said an autopsy and an outside review would follow.
