Carlos Jose Hernandez Jr.
Carlos Jose Hernandez was 21 years old and from Troup, Texas. He died on June 12, 2017, while held at the Smith County Jail. Jail staff found him hanging from a shower in a side cell, and staff called a medical emergency and removed him from the ligature, but Tyler Fire and EMS later determined he was dead. Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith said observation logs and video showed the required checks were made. The Texas Rangers and the Justice of the Peace are involved, and an autopsy has been ordered.
