Carl Wayne Buntion
Carl Wayne Buntion, 78, was executed by lethal injection at the Huntsville Unit in Huntsville, Texas, on April 21, 2022, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He was Texas's oldest man on death row, where he had been held for more than three decades, most of it in solitary confinement, according to a statement by Justice Stephen Breyer. Advocate Kristin Houlé Cuellar described him as a frail man who used a wheelchair for basic functions, and said she had hoped he could live out his remaining days in prison. A Supreme Court stay request and a clemency vote by the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles did not halt the execution.
