Carl Ewing, 59, died on March 15, 2018, while held at the Shelby County Jail in Tennessee. According to the official cause of death reported by The Commercial Appeal, he died of refractory acute respiratory distress syndrome due to sepsis, a complication of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus pneumonia. Jail staff took him to Regional One Health, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia and sepsis, and he died about a month after being admitted to the hospital.
