Carl Etherington
Carl Etherington, 22, came from a farming family near Willisburg, Kentucky. According to a United Press dispatch, he wrote a note to his parents and kept asking the jailer what his mother would say before he died. He was held in the Licking County jail in Newark, Ohio, on July 8, 1910, when a mob battered down the heavy jail doors, dragged him from his cell and hanged him in the street. The Waxahachie Daily Light reported that deputies could not stop the mob, and a Licking County grand jury found that the sheriff, the mayor and the police chief failed to act to stop it, though the Birmingham Age-Herald reported that no criminal indictments were returned against them. His funeral in Williamsburg, Kentucky drew a large crowd, the Hartford Republican reported.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (neglect alleged). The Licking County grand jury found that the sheriff, mayor and police chief did not stop the mob, and that the chief left the jail yard without ordering police to disperse it.
Reported by: Licking County grand jury (court); Governor Harmon; Newark officers (the agency that held him); United Press (reporters); Associated Press (reporters); New York Times (reporters); The Hartford Republican (reporters).
