Carl Edward Moyle
Carl Edward Moyle, 28, of Elk River, Minnesota, left a two-year-old son, Gavin. He was held at the Sherburne County Jail, where on August 8, 2006, another man held there attacked him in his cell, and he died at a hospital that night. Sheriff Bruce Anderson said the other man had been placed in the same pod as Moyle, that he beat him with a metal bar, and that the two had no known prior contact. Moyle's family says the man struck him in the head while he slept, and a state investigation found that deputies failed to properly assess the threat that man posed. Moyle's mother, Jessica Repp, has filed a federal lawsuit against the county and its sheriff on Gavin's behalf, and the accused man has been indicted for first-degree premeditated murder.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (disputed; neglect alleged). The sheriff's office and grand jury say another prisoner beat Moyle in his cell, while his family's federal lawsuit says deputies failed to properly assess the threat that inmate posed and the county acted recklessly by housing them together.
Reported by: Sherburne County Sheriff's Office (Sheriff Bruce Anderson) (the agency that held him); Sherburne County grand jury (court); Moyle's family (federal lawsuit) (family or their lawyers).
Lawsuit: His family sued Sherburne County and its sheriff in federal court over the death, alleging deputies failed to properly assess the threat posed by the inmate who attacked him, and no settlement or award amount is reported.
