Calvin Stewart
Calvin Stewart, a Black man, was in the custody of a constable and a few friends who were taking him toward Aiken, South Carolina, when he died on September 26, 1893, about a mile from Langley. According to the Morning News, a mob of fifteen or twenty masked men surprised the group, took Stewart from them, and shot him many times. The coroner's inquest jury returned a verdict that he died at the hands of persons unknown. A separate account published the same day describes a different mob taking a man of the same name from a home in Edgefield County, and the two reports conflict, so the Langley account is unresolved in the record.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). The coroner's inquest jury ruled he died at the hands of persons unknown, while a separate same-day account describes a different mob that hanged a man of the same name and then released him.
Reported by: Coroner Couch's inquest jury (medical examiner or coroner); the newspaper account of the Langley mob (reporters).
