Calvin Snipes
Calvin Snipes was held in the jail at Bakersville, North Carolina, in early January 1893. On the night of January 3, a mob of masked men overpowered the sheriff's posse guarding the jail, broke into his cell and took him to a forest about half a mile away, where he was shot. Reports say the posse fought to defend him and that several deputies and members of the mob were killed in the fighting. The Associated Press dispatch said he was riddled with bullets from a hundred weapons, and a Johnson City dispatch said the sheriff's deputies fought the mob for hours before he was taken.
