Calvin Mack
Calvin Ray Mack died on June 5, 2005, while held in the medical division of the Harris County Jail in Houston, Texas. His older sister, Harriett Mack, said she spent years trying to get her brother off the streets and away from drugs, and that she expected jail staff to treat him like a human. According to the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office, Dr. Ana E. Lopez, he had AIDS and died of a brain hemorrhage linked to high blood pressure and cocaine use, which the office classified as an accident. The sheriff's internal affairs division found that a delay in care may have contributed to his death, and a deputy was dismissed. The medical examiner said she had not been told about that delay.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (disputed; neglect alleged). The medical examiner ruled the death an accident from a brain hemorrhage tied to high blood pressure and cocaine use, while the sheriff's internal affairs division found that a delay in care, after other inmates repeatedly asked guards for help, may have contributed and a deputy was dismissed.
Reported by: Harris County Medical Examiner's Office, Dr. Ana E. Lopez (medical examiner or coroner); Harris County Sheriff's Office internal affairs division (the agency that held him).
