Died in jail or a lockup
California Joe
California Joe was one of several men held at the jail in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in late January 1881. According to a Galveston dispatch citing an Albuquerque report, masked men took him from the jail on a Sunday night and hanged him on the porch of the building, in a seizure the dispatch said took about fifteen minutes. A later American Citizen account names him together with Escatsstico Pera and Miguel Barren, taken by a mob and hanged, and dates the killings to January 31, while the dispatch gives January 30.
