Caleb Lee

25 years old · died September 24, 2017 · David L. Moss Criminal Justice Center, Tulsa County, Oklahoma

Caleb Lee, 25, of Broken Arrow, died on September 24, 2017, while held at the Tulsa County Jail, after a medical emergency in his cell and at the jail's medical unit. His father, David Lee, has said the family wants to understand what happened, and Caleb had recently become a father, with his parents now caring for the baby. Medical records cited by the family's account show gastrointestinal bleeding before cardiac arrest, and the family said they had been told he died of opioid withdrawal and asked for jail video. A later Medical Examiner's Office report, cited by KTUL, attributed the fatal hemorrhage to an ulcer and classified the death as natural, while the Sheriff's Office said its investigation was pending the medical examiner's report.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (disputed; neglect alleged). The Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death natural from an ulcer-caused upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage, while his family says they were told he died of opioid withdrawal and is asking for answers and jail video, and the Sheriff's Office has said its investigation is pending.

Reported by: Medical Examiner's Office (medical examiner or coroner); Tulsa County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him); his family.
