Caleb Kenowski
Caleb Kenowski, a 22-year-old man from Duluth, Minnesota, was the father of an infant son, and his family remembers him as a little boy who loved Spider-Man, a teenager who loved to rap, and a smart, passionate young man who loved his family. He died early on May 21, 2023, less than a day after he was taken into the Pima County Adult Detention Center in Tucson, where staff found him unconscious in a detox unit. The Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner determined that he died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl and methamphetamine, and the sheriff's office said there was no neglect. The Tucson Sentinel reported that jail policy restricts people in the detox unit to bottom bunks, and that he was found on a top bunk. His family says the jail withheld his name and did not notify them, that they searched for him for months, and that his body was cremated before they learned of his death.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (neglect alleged). The medical examiner ruled it an accidental fentanyl and methamphetamine overdose, and reporting says he was placed on a top bunk despite a policy restricting detox inmates to bottom bunks.
Reported by: Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner (medical examiner or coroner).
