Caleb Gaines, a Black man, was held in the jail at Glasgow, Kentucky, in June 1898. Newspaper accounts say a mob of about fifty men on horseback took him from the jail in the early hours and hanged him from a tree. A note pinned to his body asked that it not be disturbed until noon. A later report places the hanging in the public square and says the mob came from the Pea Ridge area.
