Cage
Cage was held in the Rapides Parish jail in Alexandria, Louisiana, when, late at night on February 22, 1877, the Louisiana Democrat reports that a group of armed men overpowered the jailer, took the keys and removed him from his cell. The paper says he was hanged from an oak tree, and the jailer states that he was disarmed and held back and could not prevent the removal. A Chicago Daily Tribune dispatch dated February 23 gives a similar account, saying he was taken from the Alexandria jail by people it does not identify and hanged. The dispatch names him as a man from Wilkinson County, Mississippi, and the two accounts differ on the date.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody. A mob of armed men overpowered the jailer, took the keys, removed Cage from his cell and hanged him, according to the Louisiana Democrat citing the jailer's statement; the jailer says he was disarmed and could not prevent the removal.
Reported by: Louisiana Democrat (reporters); parish jailer.
