Burt
Burt, a Black man, was held in the jail at Paris, Kentucky, when a crowd of citizens took him from it on March 28, 1866, and hanged him from a tree in the courthouse yard. According to a secondhand newspaper report reprinted from the Paris True Kentuckian, Burt said before he died that he was innocent. The Daily Mississippi Clarion described his body as still hanging the afternoon of his death.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). The Paris True Kentuckian, as reprinted in the Daily National Intelligencer, says a crowd of citizens broke Burt out of the Paris, Kentucky jail and hanged him from a tree in the courthouse yard; a separate brief item says citizens took an unnamed Black man from the jail and hanged him, and it is unclear whether jail officers resisted.
