Burgess
Burgess was held in a Louisiana jail when, according to the New Orleans Republican, a mob came for them at night and took them out. The paper reported that Burgess was killed, listing them among the victims of violence in West Feliciana and East Baton Rouge parishes in September 1876. The paper's account describes the men who took Burgess as bulldozers and does not say whether jail officers or the sheriff resisted the mob, gave up the keys, or handed Burgess over.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. The New Orleans Republican reports that men it calls bulldozers took Burgess from a jail at night, and nothing was heard of him afterward.
Reported by: New Orleans Republican (reporters).
