Bunkle Richardson

died February 11, 1906 · Gadsden City Jail, Etowah County, Alabama

Bunk Richardson was held in the Etowah County jail in Gadsden, Alabama, when about two dozen masked men entered the building early on February 11, 1906. According to a Montgomery newspaper report, they overpowered the sheriff and jailer, forced the jailer to open the cells, and took him out. The men hanged him from a Louisville and Nashville Railroad bridge over the Coosa River, and a coroner's jury returned a verdict that he was killed by parties unknown. The Equal Justice Initiative says his relatives were forced to leave town and abandon their businesses, and that no one was ever charged in his death. His grave at Sixth Street Cemetery is now the subject of restoration efforts by local advocates.
