Died in jail or a lockup
Brooks
Brooks was held in an Indiana jail when a mob took him out and killed him without trial, according to a Seymour Times editorial reprinted in the Nashville Union and Dispatch in April 1867. The editorial described his death as lynch law and defended the killing.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. The Seymour (Ind.) Times editorial says Brooks was executed by lynch law after a mob took him from jail, and defends the lynching as a response to unpunished killings.
