Brianna Grier
Brianna Grier, 28, was the mother of twin girls, and her adoptive father, Marvin Grier, said the family had called 911 for help during a mental health crisis, not for her death. In July 2022, Hancock County deputies placed her in the back of a patrol car, and she was later found on the roadside after falling from it. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said a rear passenger door was never closed, while her family's attorney, Ben Crump, alleges she was not secured with a seatbelt and suffered a skull fracture. She was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, where she remained in a coma and died on July 21, 2022. The GBI has said its investigation is complete, and the district attorney declined to take the case to a grand jury, while the family has said it plans a wrongful death lawsuit.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (disputed; neglect alleged). The GBI says a rear passenger door was never closed and the deputy believed he had closed it, while Ben Crump and the family allege she was not secured by a seatbelt and was thrown from the unsecured vehicle, and the family says deputies did not bring an ambulance during her mental health crisis.
Reported by: Georgia Bureau of Investigation (outside investigators); Ben Crump (family attorney) (family or their lawyers); Hancock County family (family or their lawyers).
