Brian R. Gurchiek, 51, of Columbia City, was held at the Whitley County Jail. He was found unconscious in his cell during a routine check early on Monday, April 20, 2015. Medics were unable to save him. Whitley County Coroner Randy Dellinger said the autopsy found he died of asphyxia due to hanging and ruled the death a suicide. The Whitley County Sheriff's Department asked the Indiana State Police to investigate.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide. The Whitley County Coroner ruled that asphyxia due to hanging caused his death, and ruled it a suicide.
