BreaAnn Carlin
BreaAnn Carlin, 26, of Plain City, died on September 7, 2020, at the Weber County Jail in Ogden, Utah, where she had been held for about nine days. Her younger sister, Allyson Carlin, described her as a free-spirited, very caring person who would do anything to help others. The Weber County Sheriff's Office said Carlin became unresponsive while being helped to the shower in the jail's medical unit, where she was being observed, and that she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her sister, citing the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner autopsy report, says the cause was severe dehydration, and disputes the account that Carlin was being assisted when she collapsed. The sheriff's office said the jail's policies were reviewed after the death and none were changed.
Cause of death, as reported: Died from neglect by staff (disputed). The Utah medical examiner's autopsy report lists severe dehydration as the cause, as quoted by her sister Allyson Carlin, who says jail staff left her without assistance while she was withdrawing from narcotics and losing weight, and disputes the Sheriff's Office account that staff were helping her to the shower.
Reported by: Utah Office of the Medical Examiner (medical examiner or coroner); Allyson Carlin, her sister (family or their lawyers); Weber County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held her).
