Brave Bear

died November 15, 1882 · Yankton County Jail, Yankton County, South Dakota

Brave Bear was a Sioux man who, through an interpreter before his death, asked that his people not seek revenge, kill no horses, and hold no customary mourning, and that his message be carried to President Arthur. He was hanged in the jail yard at Yankton, Dakota Territory, on November 15, 1882, in a private execution watched by a few officers and reporters behind a high board fence. Attending physicians pronounced him dead about fifteen minutes after the drop. One newspaper account says he struggled briefly after the drop; another says he weakened on the platform. One account says he was buried in the Catholic cemetery.

Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state

Reported by: Yankton jail and United States marshal's office (the agency that held him); attending physicians; news reports.
