Brant O'Grady
Brant O'Grady, described in the Washington Weekly Post as about 55 years old, was held in the Greensville County jail in Emporia, Virginia, on March 24, 1900. A mob took him from the jail about an hour after Walter Cotton was lynched and hanged him from the same tree. The same paper reported that a former judge pleaded with the crowd not to lynch him and that O'Grady maintained his innocence. The Semi-Weekly Messenger reported that the sheriff and judge were too frightened to stop the mob once the state militia had left, and the Richmond Dispatch reported that the officers present did not intervene.
