Brandon W. Hedrick
Virginia executed Brandon W. Hedrick by electric chair on July 20, 2006, after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to intervene. Hedrick's attorneys had asked Gov. Timothy M. Kaine for clemency, arguing that he had not committed rape and had received inadequate legal representation at trial; Kaine rejected the petition. Family members of the woman whose death was the basis of the case were present to witness the execution. Before he died, Hedrick spent the afternoon visiting with family, requested a last meal, and in his final words prayed for others and said he was ready to go and be free.
Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state. Hedrick's attorneys argued in a clemency petition that he had not committed rape and had received inadequate legal representation at trial.
