Bob Davis

died August 17, 1906 · Greenwood County, South Carolina

Bob Davis, a Black man, was held in the jail at Greenwood, South Carolina, in August 1906 when a mob came for him. Governor Heyward, who had come from Columbia, urged the crowd to let the law take its course, and the crowd cheered him before taking Davis from the jail. One account says the mob shot Davis after taking him out of the governor's sight, while another says they hanged him at the edge of town and then riddled his body with bullets. The two accounts also give different dates for the killing, August 16 and August 17.
