Blackeye Chadwick Marshall
Blackey Marshall was held at the Colfax jail in Colfax, Washington, when he died on January 8, 1898. The White Pine News reported that a masked mob called the jailer out with a false story about a prisoner, then got in and took the keys. The Salt Lake Herald instead reported that the mob forced the jailer to hand over the keys after a train arrived around 1 a.m., and that the jailer, the only officer at the courthouse, made no preparation to resist. The men took Marshall from his cell and hanged him from a window beside the courthouse wall. The White Pine News said no effort was being made to learn the identities of those responsible.
