On Tuesday night, January 7, 1890, a group of masked men took him from a deputy sheriff who was taking him to jail near Robbins in Barnwell County. The men tied him to a tree by the roadside and shot him. The Richmond Dispatch reported that efforts were made to conceal the killing and that the remote location made full information hard to obtain.
