Billy Tucker

32 years old · died June 4, 2022 · Cumberland County Jail, Cumberland County, Maine

William Tucker, of Lewiston, loved music and dreamed of becoming a rapper, and he worked at Lowe's to support his family. His family says he lived with a substance use disorder for years, was preparing to enter a rehabilitation program, and was a loving son, brother and uncle who fished and camped with his father on Sebago Lake. He died in his cell at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland on Saturday, June 4, 2022. The State Medical Examiner's Office has classed his death as suicide, and his family says a detective told them he died by asphyxiation with a bedsheet. His relatives say he was going through withdrawal symptoms and should have been watched more closely, and his father plans to hire an attorney.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed; neglect alleged). The state medical examiner ruled it a suicide by asphyxiation, but William's family says he was experiencing withdrawal symptoms that staff should have monitored more closely and that his father plans to hire an attorney.

Reported by: State Medical Examiner's Office (medical examiner or coroner); Cumberland County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him); his family.
