Bill Johnson
According to a Waco, Texas dispatch reprinted in several newspapers in January 1895, Bill Johnson was shot several times and then taken from a jail by a mob, which hanged him while he was still alive. The dispatch says a trapper later found his petrified body in sand near the Brazos River, and that a doctor who handled the body before burial recognized it as Bill Johnson's. The dispatch does not say when the lynching happened or how the jail's officers acted. The reports name no one who saw the hanging.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). A Waco, Texas dispatch reprinted in the Baxter Springs News says lynchers shot Bill Johnson several times, took him from a jail and hanged him while he was still alive, and a second account says he was taken from a jail by a lynch mob after being mortally wounded.
