Died in jail or a lockup
Bill Hardy
Bill Hardy was held in the jail in Brownsville, Texas. According to a brief item reprinted in the Indiana State Sentinel in August 1850, a crowd took him from the jail and hanged him until he died. The item also repeats a claim that he had killed Capt. Brannin, which I have left out of this account.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. The Indiana State Sentinel, reprinting a news item, says a crowd broke into the Brownsville, Texas jail, took him out and hanged him.
Reported by: Indiana State Sentinel (reprinting a news item) (reporters).
