Bill Haley
Bill Haley was held in the Paulding County jail in Paulding, Ohio, in July 1886. A crowd of masked, armed men surrounded the jail and demanded the keys from Sheriff Parr, saying they meant to hang him. The sheriff spoke with the crowd while a deputy tried to move Haley out through a side door, but the mob saw this and seized him. They took him about a mile out of town and hanged him from a tree; a later account says only that a masked mob took him from the jail and hanged him, and gives no further detail.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A masked mob of more than a hundred men surrounded the Paulding, Ohio jail, demanded the keys from Sheriff Parr, seized the prisoner and hanged him from a tree about a mile out of town.
Reported by: Sheriff Parr (the agency that held him); news reports.
