Bill Campbell

28 years old · died May 25, 1901 · Grant County, Oklahoma

On May 25, 1901, a crowd of about 500 people broke into the county jail at Pond Creek, Oklahoma Territory, where Bill Campbell was being held, after a deputy sheriff had been shot. The sheriff refused to give up the keys, and the mob wrecked the jail, took Campbell out and hanged him from a telegraph pole in front of a saloon. According to the Wichita Daily Eagle's Pond Creek correspondent, Campbell sang hymns as he died, including fragments of 'Nearer My God to Thee' and 'I am going home to Glory.' The account says he spent his last minutes praying and singing rather than pleading for his life.
