Bigler Jobe Stouffer II

79 years old · died December 9, 2021 · Oklahoma State Penitentiary, Pittsburg County, Oklahoma

Bigler Jobe Stouffer II, 79, was executed by lethal injection at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester on December 9, 2021. The night before, he spoke by phone to protesters, thanked them for their support and spoke of his faith in God, and his son, Trey Stouffer, had delivered a petition with thousands of signatures asking the governor for mercy. The state Pardon and Parole Board recommended clemency, but Governor Kevin Stitt rejected that recommendation. Stouffer's lawyers argued that the three-drug protocol posed a risk of unconstitutional pain and suffering, and the courts denied his stay requests, which relied in part on concerns raised about the October execution of John Grant. The Oklahoma Department of Corrections said the execution proceeded without complication, and media witnesses reported no convulsions or vomiting, while Stouffer's last words asked that his father forgive the people involved.

Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state. He maintained his innocence, the parole board recommended clemency, which Governor Kevin Stitt rejected, and his lawyers argued the three-drug protocol risked unconstitutional pain.

Reported by: Oklahoma Department of Corrections (the agency that held him); Oklahoma Attorney General's Office; medical examiner's report (medical examiner or coroner); media witnesses.
