Bert Dudley
Bert Dudley was held in the Johnson County jail in Olathe, Kansas, in September 1916. Early on September 21, a masked mob arrived, battered down three jail doors, and took him to a telephone pole, where they hanged him. One account says Sheriff Carroll refused to give Dudley up and was overpowered, while another says the sheriff gave in rather than resist. A later report says the mob also shot his body many times. The attorney general and county attorney opened an investigation, and investigators had found few clues to identify any member of the mob.
