Beach Thrash

15 years old · died April 3, 1924 · Meriwether County, Georgia

Beach Thrash, a Black boy whom newspapers gave as 15 or 16 years old, was being held in the jail in Woodbury, Georgia, on April 3, 1924. A mob of about 40 men forced their way into the jail and took him from custody. The mob drove him out of town toward the Flint River, where he was killed; one account says he was hanged and another says he was shot, and his body was later found nearby. The sheriff, who was away at the time, was reported to believe most residents of Woodbury condoned the killing.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). One account says a mob hanged him on the banks of the Flint River after he shot the police chief, while another says the mob shot him after taking him from the Woodbury jail.

Reported by: witnesses, as reported in the Atlanta dispatch (witnesses); news reports.
