Executed
Austin Nelson
Austin Nelson had worked odd jobs around Juneau for several years before his death. He was hanged in a judicial execution at the federal jail in Juneau on March 1, 1948. A legal historian who studied the case says the proceedings were marred by prosecutorial misconduct, weak evidence and serious errors. The historian also says the case reflects a broader pattern of racial disparity in Alaska's use of the death penalty.
