Austin Dionne

23 years old · died October 10, 2013 · Alachua County jail, Alachua County

Austin Dionne, 23, is remembered by his mother, Windy Nochomson, as her son, who she said had many problems and whom she misses. He was held at the Alachua County jail, where in September 2013 he attempted suicide by hanging himself with a bedsheet in a pod that the Sheriff's Office said he had been moved to for his safety. He died in hospital twelve days later, on October 10, 2013. The Alachua County Sheriff's Office and an internal jail report say he gave no clear sign he was an imminent suicide risk. His mother says he should not have been housed in general population, and she is considering a negligence lawsuit.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (neglect alleged). The Alachua County Sheriff's Office says Dionne hanged himself with a bedsheet after being moved to a pod for his safety, and his mother says jail staff should not have housed him in general population despite his suicide risk.

Reported by: Alachua County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him); his mother.
