Ashley Schubiger, 25, grew up in Colonia, a section of Woodbridge, and was a self-employed artist and a Woodbridge High School graduate who had attended Middlesex County College. She was held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Facility, where she was found unresponsive in her cell on August 5, 2013, after hanging herself. Her mother, Ellen Schubiger, sued, saying staff knew Ashley was at risk of suicide yet did not screen her properly, review her records, provide the one-on-one supervision she needed, or place her on suicide watch, and left her in a cell with items at-risk people use to self-harm. Middlesex County paid $20,000 to her estate in a September 2017 settlement that admitted no wrongdoing; her mother died before the settlement was reached.
