Arthur Williams

82 years old · died January 15, 2018 · Jackson County Jail, Jackson County, Florida

Arthur Williams, 82, was originally from Ontario, Canada. His landlord said he seemed a very lonely man with no family or anyone to talk to, and that his mother had died the year before and his daughter lived in England. He died on January 15, 2018, in a cell he shared at the Jackson County Correctional Facility in Marianna, Florida, where police said he was attacked by his cellmate in an ambush-style assault. The corrections chief said procedures were followed and that an assessment of the death would be conducted, while his family has hired a lawyer to learn how he came to share a cell with that man and whether the jail failed to protect him.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (neglect alleged). Police say Williams's 21-year-old cellmate beat him to death in an ambush-style attack, and his family's lawyer says the jail may have failed to protect him by placing them in the same cell.

Reported by: Marianna Police Department (the agency that held him); Jackson County Correctional Facility officials (the agency that held him); Florida authorities (outside investigators); his family's lawyer (family or their lawyers).
