Arthur Perkins

died March 24, 1871 · Virginia City jail, Virginia City

Arthur Perkins was held in the county jail in Virginia City when, around 1 a.m. on March 24, 1871, masked members of a vigilance group calling themselves 601 took him from the jail and hanged him, according to Dan de Quille's 1870s reporting, reprinted in the Record-Courier in 1924. According to that account, armed men posted guards around the block where the jail stood and turned back townspeople who approached. The death was carried out by the mob, not by the jail staff, and the account attributes it to that group alone.
