Archie Wilson
Archie Wilson, a Black man, was held in the Huntsville jail in Alabama. On the night of September 7, 1904, a mob of about a thousand people broke through the sentry lines around the jail, disarmed the guards and forced its way inside, threatening to burn the building with the people in it unless he was handed over. Deputies and militia fought the mob on the stairs in a pitched battle, and three militiamen were killed and seven wounded. The mob took Archie Wilson from the jail and lynched him. The available account gives no more detail than this about who he was or what his family made of his death.
