Archie Johnson was held at the jail in Russell County. The New York Herald reported in June 1873 that he was hanged on a scaffold in an open field north of town, about half a mile from the jail, before a crowd it estimated at six thousand. According to the paper, he spent his last night in prayer, professed religion and talked with his spiritual advisers, and was taken from his cell at midday under a guard of forty men. In a written statement he urged others to avoid strong drink and bad company.
